Event Overview
TAKING THE SEARCH FOR TALENT ACROSS INDIA
A race became a pathway.
For Indian MTB to grow, waiting for riders to discover the Himalayas was not enough.
HASTPA therefore began taking the opportunity to the riders.
Ahead of the 15th MTB Himalaya in 2019, HASTPA and Hero Cycles organised Road to Himalaya races across nine Indian cities. The initiative created a national talent-identification platform through which promising riders could earn an opportunity to participate in MTB Himalaya and compete alongside international athletes.
That changed the equation.
An aspiring rider no longer needed to begin with international contacts, expensive overseas racing or an established sporting background.
A local competition could become the first step towards the Himalayas.
SPORTING IMPACT
Road to Himalaya represented an important shift from event organisation to athlete discovery.
It widened the geographical search for MTB talent and connected city-level riders to a national and international race platform.
THE BIGGER IDEA
The programme demonstrated the structure HASTPA had gradually created:
Discover → Train → Race → Perform → Support → Represent
School programmes could introduce the bicycle.
Local events could identify ability.
MTB Shimla could test it.
MTB Himalaya could expose it to international competition.
And professional HASTPA-supported teams could take the rider further.
A race was no longer the destination.
It had become the beginning of a career.
