TAKING THE RACE TO THE DESTINATION

After years of bringing riders to major events, HASTPA began exploring another question:

Could a mountain-bike race create a new tourism destination?

The answer emerged through MTB Himachal.

In June 2022, the MTB Himachal festival was staged at Janjehli in Mandi's Seraj region, under the wider Naye Rahein Naye Manzilein tourism initiative. Six competition categories opened the event to local, amateur and elite riders.

Instead of concentrating visitor activity in an already established tourism centre, the event directed attention towards a lesser-known Himalayan destination.

That was significant.

TOURISM IMPACT

A mountain-bike event immediately requires:

Accommodation.
Food.
Transport.
Local guides.
Mechanical support.
Volunteers.
Route knowledge.
Communications.
Spectators and visitors.

For a small mountain destination, each becomes an economic opportunity.

HASTPA's regional race concept therefore began connecting sport with destination development and distributed tourism.

Regional events give riders access to different terrain, larger competitive fields and pathways towards higher-level races without requiring every participant to begin at an international-stage event.

Within the MTB Himachal format, emerging riders can test race discipline, pacing, technical handling and endurance in a serious competitive environment closer to their own region.

The event gives local cycling communities a visible sporting platform where recreational riders can begin moving towards structured competition and experienced athletes can sharpen their race preparation.

As MTB Himachal reaches different mountain settings, riders encounter changing surfaces, gradients and conditions that strengthen adaptability for more demanding mountain-bike competition.

THE LEGACY

MTB Himachal introduced a powerful new possibility:

Do not merely build a race around a destination.
Use the race to build the destination.
