Event Overview

BRINGING THE MOUNTAIN CLOSER TO THE RIDER

If MTB Himalaya was the expedition, MTB Shimla became the gateway.

Launched in 2012, MTB Shimla translated the demanding stage-racing culture of MTB Himalaya into a shorter, more accessible city-to-trail format. It opened competitive MTB to amateur cyclists, students, Armed Forces personnel, women, masters, local clubs and aspiring elite riders.

The event steadily grew.

In 2014, the third edition attracted 62 riders, including eight women and cyclists from four countries. By 2016, 105 riders from 17 cities were competing over approximately 120 km. Around 100 riders from 22 cities participated in the 2021 edition. In 2025, the 12th principal edition attracted 100 cyclists from 28 cities across 20 states to a 120-km format.

The Army, Navy, BSF, SSB, schools, colleges, clubs and independent riders have all formed part of its expanding competitive culture.

SPORTING IMPACT

MTB Shimla became a vital rung on the ladder between recreational cycling and professional competition.

Riders including David Kumar, Devender Thakur, Rajbir Singh and younger HASTPA athletes used its podiums, competition and visibility as part of their progression within the sport.

TOURISM IMPACT

The event transformed Shimla from simply a heritage hill destination into a city surrounded by rideable adventure.

The 2025 course passed through landscapes including the Kufri–Chail area and Potter's Hill–Glen forest region, while a 20-km Heritage Ride connected cycling with Shimla's architecture, history and urban identity.

THE LEGACY

MTB Shimla proved that mountain biking did not need to remain an extreme sport for a handful of experts.

It could belong to a city.
To a school child.
To an amateur.
To an Armed Forces rider.
To a future champion.

And somewhere between the Ridge and the forest trail, a cycling community was born.
