Event Overview
WHEN CYCLING LEFT THE RACE COURSE AND ENTERED PUBLIC LIFE
Not every HASTPA initiative has been about seconds, stages and podiums.
Over the years its larger cycling ecosystem has used cyclothons, heritage rides, school rides and themed public events to connect cycling with health, environment, youth participation, heritage and social causes. HASTPA describes this advocacy journey as extending over two decades.
Recent programmes have included rides connected with International Youth Day, environmental action, active ageing, World Bicycle/Environment themes and drug-free community campaigns.
In June 2026, hundreds joined a Heritage Cycling Ride in Shimla connected with the Nasha Mukt Bharat campaign. Riders included students, families, cycling enthusiasts and residents, while the route through Shimla's heritage precincts combined a message against substance abuse with fitness and active living.
THE IMPACT
These rides changed the audience.
Mountain biking spoke primarily to adventure riders.
Public cycling spoke to everyone.
Children. Parents. Senior citizens. Government. Schools. Communities. Tourists.
The bicycle became simultaneously:
sport, transport, fitness, environment, heritage and social communication.
