Event Overview
GIVING TALENT THE SUPPORT TO BECOME PERFORMANCE
Indian mountain biking had talent.
What it often lacked was the ecosystem around that talent.
Equipment. Coaching. Race exposure. Travel. Mentorship. Professional structure.
In 2014, Hero Cycles and HASTPA established the Hero Action Team, pioneering a fully supported professional mountain-bike team model in India.
Its riders began producing tangible results.
In 2015, Shiven Sharma won U-19 cross-country national gold and time-trial silver. Other athletes including Akshit Gaur, Ashish Sherpa, Akash Sherpa and David Kumar built competitive profiles through the pathway.
In 2020, four team riders travelled to Portugal for the UCI Category 2 Algarve Bike Challenge, while riders also gained other international racing exposure. By 2021, the programme had inducted more than 11 athletes.
WHY IT CHANGED THE SPORT
The Hero Action Team helped establish a radical idea for Indian MTB:
Talent deserved professional support.
A young cyclist should not have to abandon ambition simply because high-quality equipment, coaching or international racing was beyond personal means.
THE LEGACY
The model created in 2014 ultimately became the foundation for later HASTPA racing partnerships.
- The transformation was fundamental:
- from finding riders
- to building athletes.
